Study: Fewer car-deer accidents this fall
For the AJC
AUGUSTA -- A new study finds Georgia motorists are less likely to run into a deer this fall.
State Farm Insurance estimates there will be 41,749 such collisions across the state during the next 12 months, down slightly from 43,673 a year ago.
Georgia finds whitetail activity peaks in autumn as cooler weather spawns mating activity and heavier feeding in preparation for winter.
But the study reflects an improvement. The state was among the "medium risk" states that are close to the national average of 1 in 208 about a year ago.
Authorities urge caution while driving through known deer habitats.
