Stimulus weatherization timeline

Feb. 17: President Barack Obama signs the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which includes $5 billion to weatherize homes for low-income people.

March 12: The U.S. Energy Department announces Georgia will receive $124.7 million of that amount.

April 8: The Energy Department awards Georgia 10 percent of that sum — or $12.4 million — for training, planning and ramp-up purposes.

May 12: Georgia submits a plan to the federal government, saying how it will spend the $124.7 million weatherizing 13,617 homes.

June 25: The Energy Department approves that plan and awards the state 40 percent of its funding — $49.9 million — to begin weatherizing homes.

July 19: Georgia enters into a contract with Southface Energy Institute to train workers how to weatherize homes.

August through September: Georgia approves $99 million in federal stimulus contracts with 22 community action agencies, nonprofits and city and county governments to weatherize homes.

Sept. 30: Georgia has spent $2.5 million of its federal funding and has weatherized 141 homes and created or retained 68 jobs with it.

Oct. 1: Georgia enters into a contract with the University of Georgia’s Cooperative Extension College of Family and Consumer Sciences to inspect the homes weatherized with federal stimulus dollars.

Oct. 31: Georgia’s contractors have weatherized a total of 265 homes with federal stimulus funds.

Nov. 30: That number reaches 430.

Dec. 31: The state has spent $3 million of its stimulus funds and has created or saved 164 jobs through that spending.
