State Sen. David Shafer holds a slight lead over his opponent, former state Rep. Geoff Duncan, in the Republican race for lieutenant governor, according to a new poll by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Channel 2 Action News.

The two face off in the July 24 GOP runoff.

The poll found that 35.4 percent of likely Republican runoff voters said they would cast their ballot for Shafer.

Results showed that 31.4 percent said they would vote for Duncan. The spread falls slightly outside the poll’s 3.5 percent margin of error.

A third of voters said they were undecided.

The poll was conducted by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs. It was conducted from July 5 to 12 and included 769 likely Republican runoff voters.

The results mimic an AJC/WSB poll conducted earlier this year, that gave Shafer a slight edge over Duncan, when a lot of voters were undecided heading into what was then a three-person primary.

Of registered Republicans polled in April, two-thirds said they were undecided.

Despite results showing a close race, Shafer pulled in 49 percent of the vote during the May primary, nearly winning the nomination outright.

Duncan secured a spot in this month’s runoff with 26.6 percent.
