Dream coach/general manager Marynell Meadors said the team “divorced Chamique Holdsclaw from her contract” Wednesday, making the forward an unrestricted free agent who could sign with any team in the WNBA.
“I actively tried to trade [Chamique],” Meadors said. “I did my best for three and a half weeks, and now I can turn my attention to our next game.”
The Dream plays host to Connecticut on Friday.
The contract settlement with Holdsclaw clears a space on the Dream’s roster for center Yelena Leuchanka, who reported to the team Wednesday morning after completing her commitment to play professional basketball in Turkey. Now, the Dream has 11 players on their roster, which is the required number for all WNBA teams.
The contract settlement with Holdsclaw also erases any doubt about the roster spot for third-round pick Brittainey Raven, a 6-foot guard who played at Texas last season. Raven is the Dream’s only pick from the 2010 draft on the roster.
“Going into the draft and hearing the different analysts give their opinions about this team, they said [the Dream] were only to keep one player and they were assuming that was going to be the first-round pick [Chanel Mokango],” Raven said. “Coming into training camp I knew they needed a 3-point shooter and I knew they needed a big guard that was athletic and could defend. So, I just came in and did what I was best in.”
