ABOARD THE USS BATAAN —
The Florida Gators will be without starting point guard Scottie Wilbekin for Friday night’s Navy-Marine Corps Classic and possibly longer.
Gators coach Billy Donovan suspended him about 30 minutes before the team left Gainesville on Thursday morning. He did not disclose the reason for the punishment, though he said it is not an NCAA or legal issue “right now.” The suspension is indefinite.
“Scottie is a great kid who made some choices and did some things,” Donovan said. “How long it lasts, I don’t know. It was my decision this morning to do that after finding out some information on some things.”
No. 10 Florida likely will start shooting guard Kenny Boynton at point against Georgetown in Friday night’s season opener aboard the U.S.S. Bataan (9 p.m., NBC Sports Network). Boynton, a senior, was expected to play some point guard this season anyway.
The Gators now are down two possible starters with forward Casey Prather sidelined by a concussion.
Wilbekin is a junior from Gainesville who averaged 2.6 points and 1.6 assists per game last season.
