Luke Weaver allowed just one unearned run in 6 1/3 innings and Giovanny Alfonzo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as Florida State defeated Florida 4-1 on Tuesday night in Gainesville to improve to 16-0 on the season.
Weaver (3-0) allowed three hits while striking out five and walking two for the Seminoles, ranked No. 12 in the country by Baseball America. Florida State is off to its best start since 2007, when it began that season with a school-record 23 straight wins.
Josh Delph and and former Port St. Lucie High School standout Stephen McGee each had added an RBI for the Seminoles.
Starter Danny Young (0-1) took the loss for the Gators (8-10). He allowed three runs on three hits in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one. Harrison Bader had two of the Gators’ five hits.
Illinois State 17, Miami 6: Brock Stewart collected five RBIs and Chad Hinshaw and Kyle Stanton each homered and had four RBIs as the visiting Redbirds (6-7) routed the Hurricanes (13-5) in the opener of a two-game series.
Starter Eric Whaley (0-1) took the loss for Miami, allowing five runs on eight hits in two innings. Illinois State racked up 20 hits, with Hinshaw going 4-for-6.
Chris Barr and Roger Gonzalez each had two of the Hurricanes’ nine hits.
Starter Brad Sorkin (3-1) earned the win for the Redbirds, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings.
Maine 8, Florida Atlantic 0: The Owls (10-7) were shut down by Jake Marks, who pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead the visiting Black Bears (9-10) to the victory. FAU starter Brandon Rhodes (1-1) gave up three runs in three innings while taking the loss. Robert Buckley, Geoff Jimenez and Tyler Rocklein had a hit apiece for the Owls.
