Francoeur: Play me or trade me

By Christian Boone

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Perhaps Kansas City, home to half-a-dozen wayward Braves, will be interested.

Lilburn native Jeff Francoeur, who's been losing playing time to rookie Fernando Martinez, has informed the Mets he'd like to be traded.

"We want to play every day," Francoeur's agent, Molly Fletcher, told the Newark Star-Ledger. "We prefer to play in New York. But if we're not going to play every day in New York, we absolutely welcome the opportunity to play every day somewhere else."

Francoeur has struggled after a good start, posting numbers (.241, 11 HR, 47 RBI) strikingly similar to those he produced in 2008, the year his Braves career went south.

Despite that, he's shown little patience with reduced at-bats. After he was benched Saturday, Francoeur made the team aware of his displeasure, according to the Star-Ledger.

“I show up and if my name’s in the lineup, I’m playing,” Francoeur told the paper. “That’s pretty much all I have to say.”

Whether or not he's traded, Francoeur's days in New York appear numbered. The Parkview High graduate, making $5 million this season, is eligible for arbitration and is expected to be non-tendered by the Mets.

Royals General Manager Dayton Moore, a former assistant to John Schuerholz, has previously shown interest in Francoeur, who would join former Braves Jesse Chavez, Bruce Chen, Kyle Davies, Wilson Betemit, Brayan Pena and Gregor Blanco on the Kansas City roster.
