Smog level Thursday bad for kids, seniors and asthmatics

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The oppressive heat on Thursday is expected to bring more dirty air.

Forecasters are predicting more smog, and the Clean Air Campaign is announcing a Code Orange Smog Alert.

Orange is in the middle of a 5-color system measured by the Air Quality Index. The index for Thursday is expected to be 101, at the clean end of orange, which runs from 100 to 150.

The expected concentrations of ground-level ozone should be unhealthy for "sensitive groups," the Campaign said. That means children, older adults and people with heart or lung disease, including asthma, should refrain from outdoor exercise.

Air quality has exceeded federal standards in Atlanta on 11 days so far this year, and the smog season continues through September.
