To receive a full diploma, students must pass each of the four portions of the test: English/language arts, math, science and social studies. They also must pass the Georgia High School Writing Test, which was administered separately.

The lowest passing rate in the metro area was Atlanta Public Schools, with 58% passing.

Overall, students didn’t fare as well on the test this year, and state officials attributed that to the fact that this is the first year that students were tested on their knowledge of the new integrated math.Since 2006, current high school juniors have been taught integrated math -- which combines algebra, geometry and statistics in a single course.

Statewide, 14,875 students of about 93,000 first-time test-takers --- or 16 percent --- couldn't pass math this year. That compares with a 9 percent failure rate last year, when the math portion of the five-part graduation test was based on a less-rigorous curriculum known as Quality Core. It also goes against a slight improvement this year in the statewide passing rates for the English/language arts, social studies and science portions of the test
