Georgia judges voted to permit the wearing of religious headwear in courtrooms in hope of avoiding controversies like one that happened in Douglas County.

At a meeting this week of the Judicial Council of Georgia -- the policy-making body of Georgia courts -- judges from around the state unanimously voted for measure to permit headgear in court if worn for religious or medical reasons.

Last December, Douglasville Municipal Court Judge Keith Rollins ordered a woman arrested for contempt of court when she refused to remove her hijab, a headscarf worn by Muslim women, because she said it would violate her religious faith.

Rollins sentenced the woman, Lisa Valentine, to 10 days in jail. The incident prompted a U.S. Justice Department complaint.
