The Georgia Department of Transportation will close a DeKalb County bridge for up to a year to replace the flood-damaged structure.

The bridge on Redan Road over Barbashela Creek was damaged beyond repair by flooding that hit metro Atlanta on Sept. 20, DeKalb officials said, and has been closed since days after the heavy rains stopped.

Work to replace the bridge, located between South Hairston Road and Redan High School, could take anywhere from six to 12 months, county officials said.

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis said Wednesday in a statement that the project would be completely funded by federal dollars because the road is a federal-aid route.
