Q: Who pays the expenses, including salaries, for the Georgia State Patrol officers and GBI agents at University of Georgia football games?
— Sid Haggard, Covington
A: The UGA Athletic Association pays all expenses, including salaries, for security at the games, which includes the Georgia State Patrol officers who accompany coach Mark Richt and GBI agents who provide additional police force needs. In fiscal year 2009, it paid about $132,500 to the UGA Police Department, which hires the additional security, and $55,500 to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, according to the athletic association.
Q: Several relatives and friends spent hours getting home Sept. 21 during the flooding because roads were closed. Volunteers with groups such as the Georgia Wing Civil Air Patrol have training to handle traffic in inclement conditions. Why weren’t they called in to help?
— Kipling L. McVay, Waleska
A: The Georgia Wing is typically not called in during emergencies to help with those problems because it cannot be involved with specific law enforcement operations such as traffic, said Lt. Col. Joseph Knight, emergency services officer for the Georgia Wing. The CAP, a nonprofit auxiliary of the Air Force that uses trained volunteers, is most commonly used to help with disaster relief and search and rescue.
