Q: What is the status of “cash for appliances” money for Georgia residents?

— Karen Fuerst, Atlanta

A: The Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority applied in mid-October to the U.S. Department of Energy for the residential Energy Star appliance rebate program (Georgia will receive up to $9.3 million). It is awaiting approval of the application, which is expected by the end of November, said GEFA spokesman Shane Hix. He said the rebates will be available to consumers early next year. Appliances purchased prior to the official start date of the program will not be eligible for rebates.

Q: Concerning “Gone with the Wind,” I remember it was at Loew’s Grand and then it moved on to the Fox Theatre. How long did it run consecutively before it was taken away?

— Alice Wilson, Dallas

A: The movie premiered at the Loew’s Grand (affiliated with MGM) on Dec. 15, 1939, and ran there until spring 1940, said Don Rooney, curator of urban and regional history at the Atlanta History Center. It then moved to the Rhodes Theater downtown, as did most of the movies that debuted at Loew’s (movies at the Fox typically moved to the Roxy), he said. “Gone With the Wind” returned to the Loew’s in fall 1940 for its one-year anniversary. He said the film screened at the Fox during the Civil War Centennial celebration, and it has been shown there numerous times since.
