Q: What accommodations are made for the days of schooling missed by the participants of the Little League World Series?
— Paul White, Stone Mountain
A: The players on Warner Robins’ girls and boys teams who attend Houston County schools chose not to enroll until they returned from the competition, said Beth McLaughlin, director of community and school affairs for the school system. All but one of the 10 players on the boys team and eight of the 12 players on the girls team attend Houston County schools. McLaughlin said the girls enrolled on Aug. 21 and the boys enrolled last week. The remaining five players attend Byron Middle School (in Peach County) and private schools Central Fellowship Christian Academy in Macon and the Westfield School in Perry.
Q: I would like to know who made the decision that the elderly are not eligible for the swine flu vaccination and what is the reasoning behind it?
— Jimmie Johnson, Cumming
A: The decision that healthy people over 65 would be the last eligible for the swine flu vaccine was made by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which is comprised of medical experts and advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Healthy individuals older than 65 are the least likely to contract swine flu, according to information from the committee cited in a New York Times story. The paper reported that data from the CDC showed that half of the cases occur in those aged 5-24 compared to seasonal flu, which typically afflicts a greater number of elderly individuals.
