Q: The island of Hispaniola is one-third Haiti and two-thirds Dominican Republic. Has the Dominican Republic suffered any damage from the earthquake? — Sally Segur, Douglasville
A: The earthquake was felt in the Dominican Republic, which occupies the eastern part of Hispaniola, and its capital, Santo Domingo, about 200 miles from Haiti, according to The New York Times. The newspaper reported that high-rise buildings in Santo Domingo shook, but they were undamaged. The Dominican Republic was included in a tsunami warning issued by the National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center shortly after the quake.
Q: What is the name of the passenger who took aggressive action to stop the terrorist in the attempted bombing of a Delta/Northwest airliner on Christmas Day? — Elisabeth Wagoner, Adairsville
A: Jasper Schuringa, a Dutch filmmaker, said on CNN that he jumped over the passenger next to him, reached across the aisle and lunged for the suspect. Schuringa said: “He was getting on fire. And he was still holding the device, the bomb. And he was still holding it in his hands. And I had to, like, rip the bomb out of his hands.” News organizations reported that President Barack Obama told his national security team that the disaster was “averted by brave individuals, not because the system worked, and that is not acceptable.”
