Q: In the Cash for Clunkers program, will the clunkers be destroyed by the government or will they end up back on the road polluting the air? — Ann Lee Bussey, Stone Mountain

A: Some parts of the trade-in vehicle, excluding the engine or drive train, can be sold before it is crushed or shredded. The vehicle cannot be resold, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Dealers can disable the engine after receiving the government’s payment for the credit but until then, they must store the vehicle at their location or property controlled by the dealership.

Q: The Aug. 2 article about the Atlanta mansion market reported that a recent study showed that “Georgia has 26,000 fewer millionaire households than it did in 2007.” How are millionaire households determined? — Judy Greene, Marietta

A. A millionaire household is defined as one with $1 million or more in investable or liquid assets (excluding sponsored retirement plans and real estate), according to New York-based Phoenix Affluent Marketing Service. A July report by the organization, a division of Phoenix Marketing International, said there are 5.1 million U.S. millionaire households, a 14 percent drop since June 2007. Hawaii has the most millionaires per overall population, followed by Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut and Virginia.
