SAVANNAH — The president of a south Georgia elementary school PTA has been arrested on charges she stole nearly $7,800 from her organization.

Savannah-Chatham police said Monday that 55-year-old Thomasina Smith of Savannah has been charged with two counts of theft by taking. Police say Smith drained the PTA's bank account by writing checks to herself and cashing them all.

Smith told The Associated Press she is innocent and the accusations are untrue.

Police say nearly $4,400 of the money was owed to the World's Finest Chocolate company for a school fundraiser where students sold candy.
