Pot brownies lead to arrest of Oconee High students
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five high school students in Oconee County have landed in hot water for allegedly hiding and eating marijuana-laced brownies at school.
Oconee County sheriffs deputies arrested two teenagers and filed juvenile complaints against three others at North Oconee High School in Bogart Tuesday after receiving a report that a 16-year-old student brought the brownies to school to celebrate another student's birthday, and the brownies were distributed to several students.
School officials realized there was an issue with the brownies when one student fell ill and divulged the cause of the illness, according to police.
Alexandria Marie Stubbs, 17, and Travis Michael Wells , 18, were charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, according to an Oconee Sheriff's Office news release. Police did not name the students who were issued juvenile complaints, but they face disciplinary actions.
Oconee County Schools Superintendent John Jackson told the Athens Banner-Herald that school officials cannot discuss disciplinary actions for a specific student, according to federal law, but Jackson outlined the school system’s disciplinary process.
Students who are suspected of a serious violation of the student code of conduct are given a chance to tell their side of the story during a hearing — usually held within 10 days of the infraction, Jackson said.
“We can’t make an assumption until the student has had a chance to share his or her side of the story,” Jackson said.
