The U.S. Postal Service says it's shutting down the mail processing center in Columbus and moving the work to Macon.

South Georgia District Manager Julius E. Locklear announced the move on Thursday. He says the move is being made because of a decline in postal volume.

Locklear says the Macon center has the capacity to handle the additional workload, and the Postal Service can mage significant savings by moving the work there.

He says that nationally, volume declined by 26 billion pieces in the past year.
