A female eastern bongo, the second oldest in the world, was euthanized Tuesday at Zoo Atlanta due to age-related complications.

Mzima, 19, arrived at the zoo in 2004, following her 1989 birth in a Texas zoo.

“Our veterinary and animal management team worked diligently to ensure Mzima received the best treatment possible,” said Dennis Kelly, Zoo Atlanta president and CEO. “The fact that she was the oldest bongo in North America is a testament to the excellent care she received throughout her life.”

Eastern bongos, native to Kenya, are members of the antelope family. The animals are among the Zoo’s most endangered mammals, with fewer than 500 believed to remain in the wild.

A necropsy, or animal autopsy, will be performed at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine.
