Man stole mail, used people's names to get credit cards, police say
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A car left wrecked on the side of a Sandy Springs road led police to suspect a man of stealing from people’s mailboxes and using their names in an identity theft scheme, Channel 2 Action News reports.
The investigation began when an officer on patrol on Dec. 16 discovered a Ford Mustang crashed and abandoned along Northside Drive.
"In the car were pieces of mail addressed to other people," Lt. Steve Rose, spokesman for the Sandy Springs Police Department, told Channel 2. “The driver of the car has fraudulently ordered some credit cards.”
The car itself was rented from an Avis Rent-a-Car near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, police said. The suspect allegedly had used using a credit card fraudulently obtained using an unsuspecting victim’s name.
The U.S. Postal Inspector’s Office is now leading the search for a 35-year-old suspect, Jason Michael Kennan.
Rose said Keenan is believed to have been driving around affluent neighborhoods in Sandy Springs and Atlanta, pulling mail from boxes, finding personal information and then using that information to fraudulently open credit card accounts.
The suspect then allegedly returned to the mailboxes to retrieve the credit cards before his victims were any wiser, Rose said.
Sandy Springs police told Channel 2 that they know of at least four victims, but there likely are others who don’t yet know that credit cards in their names are circulating.
Anyone with information about Keenan’s whereabouts is asked to call Metro Atlanta Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
