Alpharetta man fakes as NSA agent
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
An Alpharetta man pleaded guilty on Monday to impersonating a National Security Agent, authorities said.
From May 19 to Jun 9, Louis Joseph Aprile, 49, initiated meetings with local police, claiming to be an NSA deputy director, according to court documents and acting U.S. attorney Sally Quillian Yates.
He convinced police that he was assigned with organizing an anti-terrorist task force, specifically targeting a supposed Iraqi cell plotting to bomb something locally, authorities said. His motives were unclear.
But police determined Aprile was a fake.
He was indicted in July on one count of impersonating a federal agent, and could be sentenced to up to three years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine, court officials said.
"Our solid partnerships with ... departments which make up the metro Atlanta law enforcement community make such efforts doomed to fail," FBI Atlanta special agent in charge Greg Jones said about Aprile's scam.
The FBI continues to investigate.
