SAVANNAH — It's last call for smokers used to lighting up at bars in Savannah.

The Savannah City Council voted Thursday to ban smoking in bars, private clubs and other public buildings where Georgia law still allows indoor smoking.

The change takes effect Jan. 1 and will also require smokers to keep 10 feet from business entrances wherever possible.

Mayor Otis Johnson pushed the smoking ban, saying secondhand smoke in bars exposed nonsmoking patrons and employees to health risks.

At least three other Georgia counties and four cities have outlawed smoking in bars. They include Athens-Clarke County, Gainesville and Snellville.
