Three people suffered only minor injuries when the SUV carrying them crashed through a guardrail and fell about 50 feet off the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive bridge in downtown Atlanta on Wednesday.
It happened around 6 p.m. on the overpass between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Spring Street, said officer John Chafee, an Atlanta police spokesman.
Preliminary investigation indicated the driver experienced a medical emergency as the black Jeep Liberty was heading east on MLK Drive. It veered to the left, crashed through the guardrail and fell from the bridge.
All three people in it were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, Chafee said. The front-seat passenger was extricated from the vehicle by the Atlanta Fire Department.
“It was quite a drop and there was substantial damage to the vehicle,” Chafee said.
The driver was cited for being unlicensed, police said.
