Students pin hopes for bikes on academic success

By Nancy Badertscher

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Some students from Henry County’s Hickory Flat Elementary will learn Thursday whether they’ll be riding into the semester break with a new set of wheels. Academy Sports and Outdoors is giving the school 30 bicycles to present to some students for the holiday season. To be eligible, students in third through fifth grades at the school were part of an academic competition in reading and math in their individual classes. Students accumulating the most points in each category will receive a bicycle. Teachers also nominated two students per class who display outstanding character and give their personal best daily in the classroom. Those two names will join six other names per grade level in a drawing. Two more bicycles will be given away to the two names selected. In all, 10 bicycles will be given away in each of the three grade levels. The school is on Brannan Road in McDonough.
