Bill would protect employees’ social media accounts

By Aaron Gould Sheinin

Employees who use social media would not have to give account names and passwords to employers under legislation introduced Tuesday in the Georgia House.

House Bill 117, sponsored by Rep. Sandra Scott, D-Rex, would bar employers from demanding an employee’s user name and password for personal accounts, including Facebook. Employers could, however, require the information as part of an investigation of misconduct.

The bill would not apply to work accounts.
