911 operator laughs when man says girlfriend is 'on fire'

Imagine being in one of the most terrifying positions of your life and calling 911 — only to hear laughter at the other end.

“You’re calling for help, you shouldn’t be laughed at.” (Via KGUN)

In what he called a ‘freak accident,’ Lalo Delgado’s girlfriend caught on fire while driving. Obviously, Delgado called 911…

911: Is your girlfriend still on fire?

Caller: No.

911: No?

(laughter in background)

911: Ok. (chuckles) Umm...  Is your vehicle still on fire?

Caller:It's hilarious huh?

911: Sir, is your vehicle still on fire?

Caller: I just heard you smirk... Inaudible.

911: Ok, sir it wasn't regarding that ok. (via NBC)

Delgado called back a few minutes later to make sure the authorities were really on their way. (via WPVI)

The 911 operator is in Pima County near Tucson, Arizona. The County Sheriff’s office took full responsibility for the incident.

“We did not perform at the level I expect or the citizens of this county should expect and we’re going to correct that.” (Via KGUN)

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, it is investigating what exactly the operator was laughing at but the sheriff also claims the response time was not affected. (via KNXV)

The operator is still employed, pending the investigation which showed she had no prior incidents. As for the girlfriend, doctors say she has a long road to recovery.
