Man accused of killing ex-girlfriend’s baby

By Alexis Stevens

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A 28-year-old man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend’s baby was denied bond Tuesday during his first court appearance.

Darius Lamont Virger, of Dallas, was arrested Monday and charged with murder in the death of 13-month-old Diarra Nicole Chappell, according to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

Virger is not related to the baby, but is the former boyfriend of the child’s mother, Tina Marie Chappell. In mid-February, Chappell was arrested and left her baby in Virger’s care while she was in jail, according to investigators.

While in Virger’s home, Diarra died Feb. 15 while in the care of Virger and his wife. An autopsy done at the state crime lab determined the baby died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators have declined to say what they believe Virger allegedly did to the child. But after questioning him Monday, Virger was arrested.

The investigation into the homicide continues.
