Clayton County police said a teenager was shot to death Saturday after trying to steal a pair of sneakers.
Joshua Lofton, 18, answered a Craigslist ad to buy some Air Jordans for $250, Channel 2 Action News reported. He allegedly met 26-year-old Marcus Allen Lloyd at a Texaco gas station on Bouldercrest Road in Ellenwood at 7 p.m. to complete the deal.
Police said Lloyd opened fire after Lofton, who allegedly was armed with a knife, tried to run away after trying on the shoes.
Lofton’s family disagrees.
“I know that he loved shoes. Shoes was his everything,” his mother, Kim King-Chaney, told Channel 2 Monday. But she said he would never steal them.
An officer in the area saw Lloyd taking the shoes off Lofton and arrested him, Lt. Marc Richards told Channel 2. Lloyd told police that he feared for his safety, but Lofton was running away and no knife was found at the scene, Richards said.
Lloyd is charged with murder and aggravated assault, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release issued Sunday. He is being held in jail without bond.
