A Spalding County church was heavily damaged by fire early Wednesday, authorities said.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, which broke out around 4 a.m. at New Salem Baptist Church on New Salem Road, in the Vaughn community northeast of Griffin.

Spalding County Fire Marshal Eddie James told Channel 2 Action News that the building was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived.

The fire was under control at 6:45 a.m.

Investigators want to determine if lightning caused the blaze, Channel 2 reported.
