Atlanta firefighters were battling a blaze early Friday at a home in a Buckhead neighborhood.

The fire broke out shortly before 6:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of Dellwood Drive off West Wesley Road.

Flames could be seen shooting from the windows on the second floor of the large two-story home.

“Due to renovations on the second floor, turning that attic space into living space, fire was running all through the roof line, in between the plaster walls, so it was kind of hard to get to,” Atlanta fire Capt. Lorenzo McMiller said.

“When you begin to renovate an attic space, you’ve got a bunch of places where fire can hide,” Miller said. “It’s hard to get to.”

No one was at home when the fire broke out, and no injuries were reported, Miller said.

The home was being rented by four college friends who graduated together from Auburn University.

One of those friends was Francie McMath, who found out about the fire when she returned home from working an overnight shift as a nurse in the cardiac intensive care unit at Emory University Hospital.

“I drove up to about 10 fire trucks and lots of flames,” McMath said. “I’m in total shock right now. It’s awful.”

Miller said the home appeared to be a total loss.

“I’m just glad no one was here, and everybody’s okay,” McMath said. “We all have renter’s insurance, so that’s good.”
