Police: Locust Grove girl’s death a ‘tragic accident’

By Marcus K. Garner

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A Locust Grove 8-year-old’s death is being investigated as an accident after early speculation that she might have committed suicide, police said.

The girl’s father discovered her hanging in a closet Friday evening and called 9-1-1, police said. She was taken to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Police don’t believe the child’s death is the result of foul play and have ruled out the possibility of suicide, pending the final results of an autopsy.

“All evidence leads to a tragic accident,” Locust Grove police Detective Thomas Hunnicutt told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Monday.

The Henry County Coroner’s Office was awaiting the results Monday afternoon of an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of her death.

Police are not releasing the name of the child.
