Atlanta officials began a 30-day moratorium Wednesday on parking enforcement by a company it hired late last year to run the program.
The City Council approved the moratorium last week to give city officials time to address citizen complaints about the program and to resolve the legal questions surrounding it. Police can still ticket vehicles.
The moratorium legislation does not include residential permit parking enforcement.
Last year, the city approved a seven-year contract with Milwaukee-based Duncan Solutions to manage parking enforcement under a program called PARKatlanta. The contract calls for the city to receive $5.5 million a year from PARKatlanta. The company keeps all additional parking ticket revenue exceeding $5.5 million.
