A firefighter was injured early Thursday battling a house fire in northwest Atlanta.

Atlanta fire Capt. Sean Johnson said the firefighter was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital after suffering second-degree burns to his forehead while working to douse a fire at a home in the 2000 block of Verbena Street.

The injured firefighter’s name was not released, but Johnson said his injuries are not believed to be serious.

The fire broke out just before 4 a.m. and melted the siding on a house next door before being extinguished.

The American Red Cross was assisting two residents who escaped the flames.
