The driver accused of hitting and killing a brother and sister who were fixing a flat tire Monday on I-75 said he was distracted, police said.

Police arrested Kenneth Carl Ebel, 62, who is charged with vehicular homicide and failing to use due care while driving for the wreck that killed Savannah Guio Hayter and Steven Mack, Clayton County Sheriff’s officials said.

The Texas siblings were changing a flat tire in the triangular merging point between the on-ramp and northbound I-75 at Jonesboro Road late Monday morning when both were hit by a passing vehicle.

Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill said via email that Ebel told authorities he was distracted by something. Channel 2 Action News reported that Ebel was adjusting his radio.

The Fayetteville man pulled over at the time of the accident and was interviewed by police, who charged him later on Monday, authorities said.

Ebel was arrested Wednesday without incident, authorities said, and remains in the Clayton County Jail. His bond was set at $30,500 Thursday.
