A 15-year-old student at a Douglas County high school was arrested Wednesday afternoon for bringing a loaded gun on campus, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The incident happened at Alexander High School. No injuries were reported and the school was not evacuated, Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller said.

A student told a school employee about the gun, and the employee told police. A school resource officer then found the teen and took the 9 mm handgun from his backpack, Miller said.

The teen was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to the sheriff.

Authorities have not released any pending charges against the teen, whose name has not been disclosed because he is a juvenile.

The principal sent an automated phone call to parents about the situation Wednesday and will be sending home a letter Thursday, Douglas County Schools Superintendent Gordon Pritz said in a statement sent to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Of course safety and security of our children is always our first concern,” he said. “We are fortunate to have students who notified authorities, and a dedicated administration and staff, including resource officers, who genuinely care about our young people, which allowed this very unfortunate situation to be handled with no harm to anyone. We are very grateful for that.”
