The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday it is giving Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton counties a combined $20 million.
The money is to be used to support and develop more affordable housing. The federal funds will also go toward efforts to help the homeless and people with HIV/AIDS.
Each year, HUD awards money from several longtime programs to local communities for such activities. The programs include Community Development Block Grants, HOME Investment Partnerships, Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS and Emergency Shelter Grants.
The city of Augusta received $4.3 million from HUD.
