Clayton County Public Schools officials are investigating an incident in which a 13-year-old Riverdale Middle School student was injured last week after a run-in with two other students.

The injured boy struck his head against a bathroom wall during the confrontation and may have received a concussion during last Thursday’s incident, which involved two other boys. The injured student was taken to the hospital. A Student Resource Officer normally assigned to the school was away at another school when the incident happened. An SRO began looking into the matter on Friday morning.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” district spokesman Charles L. White said Monday. “The principal and teachers followed protocol. We are limited in the amount of information that we can disclose at this time due to the ages of the students involved. Efforts have been made to ensure that all involved students received due process. The contact resulted from an earlier verbal exchange seemingly initiated by the student who was injured.”

The school notified the mother of the injured boy. The mother was unavailable for comment Monday afternoon.

The incident comes less than two months after the school district created its own police force. Clayton’s $2.6 million decision to have its own security force came earlier this year after the county sheriff’s department pulled its deputies out of the school district to devote more manpower to countywide concerns.
