The rain that moved into metro Atlanta during Thursday’s morning commute should taper off by early evening and be replaced by windy conditions and much colder temperatures for Friday’s first day of winter.

There’s even a chance of snow flurries in the mountain counties of northeast Georgia Thursday night as temperatures plummet into the 20s.

In metro Atlanta, temperatures before daybreak Friday will be around 30 degrees, some 20 degrees colder than Thursday’s morning lows.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said highs will be around 60 degrees on Thursday, but only in the mid-40s on Friday.

Brisk winds will make the cooler temperatures feel even colder.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for north and central Georgia calling for gusts to 35 mph through 7 p.m. Friday.

Fourteen counties in the southwest corner of Georgia were under a tornado watch until 7 p.m. Thursday.

Minton’s weekend forecast calls for sunny skies Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the 50s and lows a few degrees on either side of the freezing mark.
