PEDS, a pedestrian advocacy organization for metro Atlanta, is hosting a public forum this week on the need to maintain and repair hazardous sidewalks throughout the city. The event will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Old Council Chambers at Atlanta City Hall, 55 Trinity Ave. Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell, Councilmembers Michael Bond and Kwanza Hall are scheduled to join Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza for a panel discussion of the sidewalk repair backlog, which is estimated to cost $152 million. PEDS is pushing for a line item in the city budget for sidewalk maintenance, a bond referendum with at least $80 million dedicated to eliminating the sidewalk maintenance backlog and changes to the City Code to make Atlanta financially responsible for maintenance.
