The Atlanta City Council voted unanimously late Monday in favor of a 30-day moratorium on enforcement of parking meters.
The moratorium will begin later this month, unless Mayor Kasim Reed vetoes the legislation. The Reed administration will support a moratorium, his staff told the council.
Councilman Kwanza Hall pushed for a moratorium in response to widespread complaints about the program. In January, a private company began to manage the program and install new parking meters in various parts of the city.
Most of the meters and enforcement has taken place in downtown Atlanta, which is located in Hall's district. The complaints include confusing parking signs, meters that don't work properly and ticketing after parking guidelines have expired.
Hall told reporters Monday he hopes the moratorium will give the city more to work out the kinks in the program. The council has also created a subcommittee that includes some citizens to come up with solutions.
The subcommittee, led by Councilman Michael Julian Bond, is scheduled to meet Friday, May 14 at 9:30 a.m.
