An Atlanta police rookie shot in the face Friday night remains in Grady Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, said an APD spokeswoman.

Reggie Robinson is one of two APD officers in the ICU unit. Osbert Beckles has been at Grady since Jan. 4, when he was hit in his patrol car by a alleged drunk driver. It’s unknown when either officer will be released from the hospital.

Robinson was dispatched to a southwest Atlanta neighborhood Friday night to investigate possible drug activity. The 35-year-old, who graduated from the police academy in November, gave chase when a suspicious man ran from him and was shot moments later near the intersection of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Lee Street, police say.

Frank Emmitt Nance remains in the Fulton County Jail, charged with nine criminal counts, including aggravated assault against a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of cocaine. He waived his first court appearance Saturday morning and was ordered held without bond until his preliminary hearing, scheduled for Jan. 25.

Records show Nance, 20, has been in and out of the Fulton County Jail several times over the last four years, including an arrest in April on assault and battery charges.

Police would not say how Nance sustained injuries evident in his mug shot. An incident report is expected to be released within the next day or two.
