The 21-year-old man accused in the early Sunday shooting death of his girlfriend in Canton was on probation for a April 2011 felony conviction in Cobb County.

Now, Trevor Nuckles, is facing a murder charge in Cherokee County, where he's accused of shooting Dejanirra Elrod, 19, five times. Elrod, who went by "DJ," died after being transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

Nuckles was with Elrod at a relative's home when he allegedly shot her before knocking the phone out of the hand of a homeowner who was attempting to call 911, according to Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Nuckles then started walking to the couple's apartment less than two miles away, but he was picked up by a Canton officer, Baker said.

Nuckles is charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and obstruction of a 911 call.

At the time of his arrest, Nuckles was on probation on a Cobb County conviction, according to Cobb Superior Court records. In April 2011, Nuckles pleaded guilty and was sentenced to time served in jail and three years probation, according to a spokesman for the Cobb County Superior Court clerk's office. The exact charges he pleaded to were not available Monday.

Nuckles' most recent arrest in Cobb came on Christmas Day, when he allegedly punched a relative twice in the face during an argument with his mother, according to an arrest warrant obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Nuckles has a history that includes nine arrests in Cobb County since 2008 but the dispositions of those arrests were not available Monday.

In November 2010, Nuckles was charged with felony aggravated battery after allegedly kicking a man twice in the head and then standing on the man's head, leaving him unconscious, according to police. The incident began when the man yelled at Nuckles, who was allegedly kicking a car, according to Marietta police, who arrested Nuckles.

That arrest came five months after Nuckles was arrested on a felony drug charge and misdemeanor charges of obstruction and giving a false name, according to a June 2010 warrant.

Elrod is survived by a son, but Nuckles is not the child's father, a relative told the AJC. She is also survived by her parents, a brother and several family members, according to her obituary posted on the Darby Funeral Home website.

A wake will be held for Elrod on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Canton, followed by a 2 p.m. funeral Saturday at Hickory Log Baptist Church, also in Canton.
