University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby announced plans Friday to merge Southern Polytechnic State University into the larger Kennesaw State University, with final approval expected in January 2015. Those plans, however, are not the first mergers under Huckaby. Earlier this year, the state Board of Regents officially merged eight colleges and universities into four new institutions:
• Georgia Regents University — a merger of Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities.
• Middle Georgia State College — a merger of Macon State and Middle Georgia colleges.
• South Georgia State College — a merger of Waycross and South Georgia colleges.
• University of North Georgia — a merger of Gainesville State College and North Georgia College & State University.
