A Georgia Tech student was robbed at gunpoint Monday outside his off-campus home, campus police said.

According to the Georgia Tech police crime alert, the male student, whose name has not been released, was checking the mail outside his home on McMillan Street in the Home Park neighborhood just north of campus shortly about 12:30 a.m. Monday when “an unknown suspect approached from behind, displayed a handgun and demanded the student’s belongings.”

The gunman fled with the student’s wallet and iPhone.

A neighbor attempted to tackle the suspect a short distance away, “but was pushed away,” according to an Atlanta police incident report.

The neighbor continued to follow the gunman “until the suspect turned towards him and pointed the silver handgun at him and he ended his pursuit and asked a passerby to call 911,” the police report stated.

The suspect was described as a black male, 20 to 30 years old, approximately 6 feet tall and wearing a black fleece jacket with a red stripe on the sleeve and a black hat. He was last seen headed west on 10th Street toward Northside Drive.

The student was not injured.
