Clayton fugitive arrested in SW Atlanta

By Michael Kanell

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

After a brief gunfight and an hour-long standoff, police in southwest Atlanta early Saturday arrested a murder suspect who was one of Clayton County’s most-wanted fugitives.

Victoriano Javier Perez, 41, was arrested in a house along Regents Street, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Perez was wanted for the fatal shooting in June of a 21-year-old man in Forest Park.

“The Southeast Regional Task Force, which is comprised of metro Atlanta agencies looking for wanted fugitives, had information that a wanted fugitive out of Clayton County was holed up here,” Atlanta Police Capt. Scott Kehrer told Channel 2.

U.S. Marshals had been serving that arrest warrant. The suspect tried to escape out a window, then fired on officers, investigators told Channel 2. Police returned fire, but apparently missed.

“He retreated back in the house and held himself there for approximately an hour,” Kehrer said.

A police SWAT team was on the way when the suspect surrendered.

Police said Perez cut his arm trying to get out a window. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and then to jail.
