Bond was denied Wednesday to two people accused in the fatal shooting of a witness to a murder in DeKalb County last weekend — part of a shooting spree that included the death of a 9-month-old boy.
DeKalb Magistrate Tracy Dorfman set June 20 as a preliminary hearing date for Kayla Dixon, 20, and Oslushla Smith, 19. The two have been charged in the murder of Alexis Malone, 19, who was found dead last Saturday, May 10.
Police say the crime spree began with the May 3 killing of Michael Philips, 29. Malone allegedly witnessed Smith shoot Phillips to death at a house party on that day.
On May 10 Dixon is accused of luring Malone to her death by driving her to a park where she was shot several times and hit in the face with a brick, according to charges read out in magistrate court.
Police believe the killing of Malone prompted a retaliatory home invasion and the point-blank shootings that left a 9-month-old baby dead and the three women “critically injured.” Smith is also charged with murder in that case, as is a 16-year-old, Crutrez Johnson.
Police said Johnson and Smith either lived in the home involved in the Saturday night shooting or “had connections” where the baby lived on To Lani Farm Road.
The neighborhood is off Redan Road in south DeKalb. Police said three or four men with their faces covered with bandannas kicked in the back door of the home on To Lani Farm Road sometime after 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Three women inside grabbed the baby, ran upstairs and tried to lock themselves into a bathroom, but the gunmen kicked it in and fired at them multiple times. Police said the home invasion came about five hours after authorities got an anonymous call saying that a woman’s body could be found on Agape Way in DeKalb. That body turned out to be Alexis Malone, 19.
