Arrest made in Gwinnett shooting death

By Marcus K. Garner

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

An arrest has been made in the August shooting death of a Gwinnett County man, authorities said.

Carlos Garcia-Viera was wanted by police in connection with the shooting death of Diego Rojo Ramirez.

New York City police last week arrested the 39-year-old Garcia-Viera on what Gwinnett police officials called an unrelated “minor” offense in New York.

Upon his arrest, authorities there identified the warrant for his arrest out of Gwinnett County, police said.

New York City online court records, however, did not identify Garcia-Viera’s charges there.

Last week, Gwinnett police obtained the arrest warrant, charging him with felony murder and aggravated assault for the Aug. 17 shooting death of Ramirez.

Ramirez, 23, was reported missing on the evening of Aug. 17 around the same time that Gwinnett County police responded to a report of gunshots and screaming at an address on Buford Highway in unincorporated Doraville, police said.

Ramirez’s body was found the next morning in northwest Atlanta, police said, and authorities were later able to identify him.

Garcia-Viera is being held at the Anna M. Kross Correctional Center in Queens, N.Y., and is scheduled to appear before a judge on Oct. 10, according to court records.
