Correctional officer killed at Georgia prison

By Alexis Stevens

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A 46-year-old correctional officer was stabbed to death by an inmate Thursday night in middle Georgia.

Larry Stell died after the attack in a dormitory area of Telfair State Prison in Helena, about 80 miles southeast of Macon, The Macon Telegraph reported. Stell had worked for the state’s Department of Corrections since August 2011.

An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI crime lab, according to the report.

The inmate, whose name was not released, was transferred to another prison, where he will be held until being charged with Stell’s death, the GBI told the newspaper.

Telfair State Prison is a high-security prison for male inmates.
