A memorial service will be held Friday in Gainesville for a Riverside Military Academy student who died Tuesday, several days after being struck by a car on a Gwinnett County road.
Mingyu Gao, an 18-year-old student from China, was removed from life support Tuesday, according to Adriane Seymour, a spokeswoman for the school.
"Friday night while on leave, two Riverside cadets were crossing Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth when a car struck them," the school said in a statement.
"One cadet suffered a mild concussion and a broken leg. He is back from the hospital, recuperating in the barracks and will return to class soon," the statement continued.
"The other cadet was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition. He remained on life support, and his parents arrived from China at 1 a.m. today," according to Tuesday's statement. "The parents spent several hours with their son in the hospital before life support was turned off."
Seymour said a memorial service for Gao, who had just started at Riverside in January, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the school's Carlos and Sandra Cervantes Theatre. Gao's family will attend the service, she said.
The name of the second student struck has not been released.
Duluth police Major Don Woodruff told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that further information on the incident will be released after accident investigators complete their report.
